A Tribute To My Sister

Sister,
You’ve been on my mind
Sister, we’re two of a kind
So sister,
I’m keepin’ my eyes on you
-Miss Celie’s Blues, ‘The Color Purple’ (written by Quincy Jones)

Do you know my sister?
If you say my name, you’ll run into hers.
Like I imagine I’ll run into her when I see her in Heaven.
Will I recognize her? Talking and walking in her new, glorified, perfect body.
My sister is free.
Away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Do you know my sister?
She’s my only sibling.
I’ve never known life without her.
She lived longer than they said she would.
God’s hand was over her life.
Giving her a loving father for a twin
A maternal grandmother for a protector
And a mother who answered the call to make my sister her life.
I imagine God saying to my mother, ‘Job well done, my daughter. I’ll continue to take it from here. I’ve got your baby…and I’ve got you too.’
Her love and affection added life to my sister’s life.
Without God hand and my mother’s sacrifice, there would be no Kiki.

Grief is the price of love.
We grieve much because we love her so much. Still.

Sister,
You’ve been on my mind
Sister, we’re two of a kind
So sister,
I’m keepin’ my eyes on you.

Keep your eyes on me, sister. I hope to make you proud, and to raise my girls as sisters who will experience a love like ours. I love you forever. I’ll see you again…
